Mountain ranges, coastlines, river systems, and valleys are mapped against the flight path. Each landmark has a documented GPS position. We calculate which side of the aircraft it falls on based on the route bearing — left or right — and flag the side with greater scenic density.

Using the NREL Solar Position Algorithm, we calculate where the sun sits in the sky at your departure time and location. If the sun is on your side, it causes glare and heat. We factor this into the recommendation — advising the shaded side when scenic features are equal, or the scenic side when the view outweighs the glare.
