Full route notes

Mumbai lifts off over the coast — a few minutes of grey-blue Arabian Sea before the aircraft wheels northeast across the Deccan. The plateau below is more varied than people expect: rocky outcrops, dry riverbeds, reservoirs glinting silver. About 800 km in, the landscape makes a decisive shift. The greens and browns of Maharashtra give way to the reds and ochres of Rajasthan — a colour change that's sudden and obvious even from 35,000 ft. Jodhpur's blue old city is unmistakable from the left window: a cluster of indigo-painted houses clustered around a massive sandstone fort on a bare rock. The descent into Delhi crosses the Yamuna flood plain; on clear days Agra is visible to the southeast, and if you look carefully the Taj's white dome catches the light differently from the surrounding city.

One of India's busiest routes — dozens of daily departures. The 1,400 km corridor covers a surprising range: humid coast, rocky plateau, then the reds and ochres of Rajasthan, all in just over two hours.

Actual paths can shift by 10-30 km due to airline routing, wind, weather, or air traffic control.

Timing, weather, and airline variation

Morning

Morning flights from Mumbai are worth setting an early alarm for. The Rajasthan section — roughly 800 km into the flight — hits in low-angle light that makes everything look better. Jodhpur's blue city, Mehrangarh Fort, the dunes — all at their most photogenic before 10 AM.

Evening

Evening northbound flights time the Agra region in golden hour. On the clearest October–November days you can pick out the Taj Mahal's dome from the right side if you know exactly where Agra sits. The Yamuna reflects orange on approach into Delhi.

Weather

Rajasthan is reliably clear for most of the year — almost no cloud cover. The Maharashtra section near Mumbai can be overcast in monsoon months but clears quickly once you're over the Deccan.

Airline routes

Most carriers serving Mumbai-Delhi fly a similar great-circle path, so the left side recommendation holds for most filed routings.
