Full route notes
Nairobi to Johannesburg heads south-southwest over Kenya before crossing into Tanzania. About 30–40 minutes after departure, Kilimanjaro appears on the left — not far east, but clearly visible from the left window as the highest point on the entire horizon. The flat-topped summit dome at 5,895 m, with its retreating but still-present glaciers, is unmistakable. Mount Meru is closer and lower, also left, near Arusha. The flight then crosses Zambia — endless bush country, barely a road visible, the occasional bend in a river. Lake Malawi appears on the left eventually, a long thin blue stripe running north-south. South Africa's highveld arrives with a distinct colour shift from the scrub to the ochre-brown Transvaal grassland, then Johannesburg's sprawl.
Three and a half hours across East and Southern Africa — Kilimanjaro on the left is the landmark of landmarks. A clear morning sighting of Africa's highest peak from 36,000 ft is one of the better things that can happen to you on a flight.
Actual paths can shift by 10-30 km due to airline routing, wind, weather, or air traffic control.
Timing, weather, and airline variation
Morning
Morning is the call. Kilimanjaro generates its own cloud system and by afternoon the summit is usually wrapped. The 7–8 AM departure from Nairobi is when you want this flight. Sit left, watch the eastern horizon once you're over Tanzania.
Evening
If the mountain happens to be clear on an evening flight, alpenglow on Kilimanjaro's summit is genuinely rare and beautiful. But count on afternoon cloud most days — don't plan around it.
Weather
Kilimanjaro creates its own weather, but the cone usually rises above the cap cloud. Even when the summit is obscured, the lower flanks and the mountain's bulk are recognizable. Lake Malawi further south is almost always visible through gaps.
Airline routes
Different carriers may file slightly different paths, especially on long-haul routes, but the left side is the statistically stronger pick for the standard route.
