Full route notes
Athens to Istanbul is short enough to feel like it's over before you've properly started, which is why you need to be at the right-side window from wheels-up. Right after takeoff, the Attica coastline slides past — rocky peninsula, clear water. Then the northern Aegean opens up and the island chain begins. Lesbos appears to the right: the third-largest Greek island, close enough to see individual bays and the shape of the port. Chios follows — limestone grey and silver from altitude. The Turkish coast takes over, mountains dropping straight into the sea. The Bosphorus arrives sooner than you expect — a narrow grey thread dividing two continents and two halves of a 15-million-person city. Istanbul on descent is extraordinary: the minarets of Sultanahmet, the Golden Horn estuary, European and Asian halves of the city with a strip of water through the middle.
About 1h 30m, but full of landmarks the whole way. The Aegean island chain, the Turkish coast, and the Bosphorus make this one of Europe's most visually rewarding short routes.
Actual paths can shift by 10-30 km due to airline routing, wind, weather, or air traffic control.
Timing, weather, and airline variation
Morning
Morning light from the east catches the Aegean islands perfectly from the right — the water is that particular clear blue that Mediterranean tourism lives off, and the island silhouettes are sharp. Best light is 8–11 AM.
Evening
Late afternoon arrivals into Istanbul are beautiful. The Bosphorus catches the golden hour light and the minarets stand in silhouette against the sky. One of the nicer short-haul arrivals in Europe.
Weather
The Aegean is frequently cloudless even when central Europe is overcast. The Turkish coast and Bosphorus approach are almost always visible. This is one of Europe's more reliable routes for views.
Airline routes
Different carriers may file slightly different paths, especially on long-haul routes, but the right side is the statistically stronger pick for the standard route.
